FALL IS FOR PLANTING!!

Many people are accustomed to planting in the spring in anticipation of beautiful flowers and a lush green lawn. The best time of the year to plant grass seed, bulbs, trees and shrubs, is during the fall. Studies have shown that the majority of root growth occurs with cooler ground temperatures whether it is a grass seedling or tree. This gives the plant a strong foundation for the following season. A building is only as strong as its foundation. The same holds true for plants.

ADVANTAGES of CORE AERATION

Aeration is usually recommended on an annual basis. Periodic core aeration reduces soil compaction and helps slow thatch build-up. It helps create growth pockets for roots and opens the way for water and fertilizer to get into the root zone of your lawn. If we core aerate this fall that would also be the perfect time to plant seed. Annual core aeration and seeding will add greatly to the overall quality and appearance of your yard.

If you are planning to seed this fall, please call and let us know so your lawn care applications, irrigation scheduling and winterization can be adjusted accordingly.

AVOID COMMON RENOVATION MISTAKES

•Avoid seed that is mixed with mulch products.
•Do not use seed that contains rye grass unless advised by us.
•Never use seed with other than 0% weeds, 0% other Crop.
•Do not wait for cooler weather to renovate.
•Don’t apply seed unless you can take care of it.
•Avoid circular sprinklers (oscillating sprinklers work best).

WHY WE RECOMMEND A TALL FESCUE/BLUEGRASS BLEND

Tall fescue initially takes hot/dry weather better but once damaged by drought or disease it recovers poorly and cannot spread to repair itself. Bluegrass, by contrast, will go dormant sooner but will recover better and can spread to heal the lawn once the heat and drought end.

Be aware-not all seed is the same! The Advantage of Using Our Seed

All cool-season grasses grown in this area are susceptible to Brown Patch, Leaf Spot, Rust, Powdery Mildew and several other diseases to one extent or another. We buy only the highest quality grass seeds of the cultivars that are recommended by Kansas State University as a result of their extensive field trials that grade these grasses for overall appearance, color, disease, heat, and drought resistance. All of the seed we use is tested and gold-label certified for high germination, 0% weeds, and 0% other crop, and low percentages of inert matter. Seeds of this quality are available only to knowledgeable, professional buyers, like us, that demand the best for their customers.
Most of the seed that is available to homeowners contains weeds and “other crop” (kinds of grasses that you do not want in your lawn). By way of example, a single pound of bluegrass seed contains 2 million seeds. If the seed label says the seed contains .01% weeds and .01% other crop, then if you buy 50 pounds of seed you will end up planting 40,000 weeds and other grasses such as annual rye grass, orchard grass, poa annua, poa trivialis, Johnson grass and other seeds that that could be long-term problems for the life of your lawn. If you buy your own seed, be a knowledgeable buyer, read the label and know the advantages and disadvantages of the cultivars in the bag.

SERVICE DESCRIPTIONS

Single Core Aeration- can reduce light thatch, relieve mild compaction, and increase root depth in clay or compacted soils. Light annual overseeding with single core aeration will gradually improve the genetics of a lawn.
Double Core Aeration– can reduce moderate thatch, relieve compaction, and increase root depth in clay soils. Double core aeration is twice as beneficial in the preparation of a seedbed as single core aeration.
Verticut and Single Core Aerate – Verticutting is the best method to prepare a good seedbed for large areas. A traditional verticut job includes verticutting, raking and removal of debris from the lawn. THAT IS NOT WHAT WE WILL DO. Rather, we will verticut the lawn then core aerate over it to redistribute the debris back over the lawn to cover the seed. THE VERTICUT DEBRIS IS BENEFICIAL. DO NOT RAKE IT UP.
